Biggest flop of 2009.

In judging this category, I have a few criteria. There needs to be a substantial amount of hype built up around the title in question. It almost certainly has to be a first party exclusive in order to accomplish this hype barrage. There is no gaming fan like the corporate sheep, who will latch on to a title based on exclusivity alone. The title needs to have a large budget and a fair amount of advertising. Lastly, there needs to be a good amount of media attention surrounding this game.

For all of these reasons, my biggest flop of 2009 has to be Killzone 2. Now I know a lot of you are thinking, "What the hell are you talking about? The graphics were uber 1337!"

Yes I know. The graphics were good, and some of the body flop physics were pretty good, but I'm not inclined to enjoy a game based on just visual appearance. I have a rare habit of demanding content in my games.

The campaign.

What can I say. Whenever you introduce boss battles into a shooter and the title on the box ISN'T Metal Gear, I've got issues with you. The cloak battle with the colonel towards the end of the game had to be one of the most tedious and boring things I've ever had to endure. The campaign in general was nothing special as far as I was concerned. There were many times when the fact that this game began development 6 years ago showed. Where was the co-op? This game would have been much better with this feature, and in this day in age, its almost a must. There were no moments/ aside from the cutscenes, that I was really impressed with Killzone 2's campaign.

Multiplayer

I will tip my hat to Sony and the developers for offering a very smooth gaming experience. Aside from that, you have to wonder who thought up this stuff. Cloaked snipers? Moveable spawns? I mean come on. In any game it was inevitable that opposing spawns would basically be right on top of eachother, producing a spawn shoot die chain reaction that took the fun right out of the game. I do think that their idea for producing a gametype that envelopes all modes was a good one, but the execution and rules for each mode ruined it. Sabotuer? Are you kidding? If you think I'm alone in my harsh judgement of the online play, just look at the online numbers. They can't even sustain 5,000 on any given day, while dinosaurs like halo 3 continue to support well over 100,000 on a nightly basis.

The controls.

Here we are. The single largest flaw in this game. I don't care how pretty a game is. If there is significant controller lag, the game is trash. For those of you that claimed there was no controller lag, you just weren't paying attention. The developers themselves finally acknowledged this after weeks of denial. This lag made sight aiming almost useless unless it was at distance.

The wrap up.

Now maybe I'm being a bit harsh here, based on my own expectations on the game, but when I see all of the resources spent on this title, and the years of development, I wonder what happened. I would kill for that kind of attention from Sony for my beloved Socom series. Wouldn't you?

Tell me what you think. Feel free to disagree, agree, call me an idiot. This is your home too. I read all responses.

Mehh i will have to agree. This game did not impress me. Online was crap to me because everyone ran around with the lock on shoty.

The only things that was really cutting edge was the graphics and physics as you said. One feature i did like that you did not mention was the option to play music from the xmb.

Killzone 2 was over hyped by console worriers on youtube. The graphics and physics are what impresses me but not gameplay... just my opinion.

I disagree. I think KZ2 gets a bad rap, especailly for its low online numbers just because it's so "hard" to play. It's not a casual friendly game like CoD is, for example. It takes quite a bit of skill and patience to be successful and it has a big learning curve and just isn't an easy game to pick up and pop in your system on a lazy Saturday afternoon, if you know what I mean.

Campaign, yeah, it wasn't anything overly special, I agree there, but it wasn't bad, and not a factor, in my mind, to qualify the game as a flop.

Multiplayer has some problems, but again, I don't think it is bad. The only time you really have spawn points on top of each other are when you get retards with the Tactician class. It doesn't take much to understand how to place spawn points correctly. Not to mention, the FANTASTIC feature to be able to create custom games where you can enable/disable features to your liking. Something not many console online games do.

I enjoyed KZ2 MP; it wasn't the best game I ever played, but it certainly wasn't the worst.

As for biggest flop - Tony Hawk: Ride was $120 for basically an unplayable game.

Not sure if KZ2 was the biggest flop of 2009 but to be fair I can't think of a bigger one off the top of my head. KZ was pretty but its not a game I throw in my PS3 on a Saturday afternoon if I'm bored.

I found killzone 2 easy as hell on mp. Getting kills was no problem and my kill to death was well over 1:1 for the duration of time i played that game. I acheived maximum rank in the first 3 days.

That's because you are pro as shit, wrath

No but really, I didn't find it exceptionally hard either... It's not really that there is a huge skill gap, it's more of what I was talking about how it's not an easy game to play. Like whenever I used to play it, after like an hour of so, I just felt 'heavy,' you know what I mean? It's like such a sluggish (not in a bad way) kind of game. But still, my 1.5 KDR is still the worst in any FPS I've played.

First off a 1.1 kdr is far from pro... Sorry wrath but thats not that good.. When everyone runs around with a lock on shoty of course there is no skill gap. That heavy feeling is controller lag as wrath said...

Wrath-x- I think sony needs to hire somone like you to test out there games before they send them out because i agree with every word you"ve said. And as for the lag in sight aiming i think every single shooting game i"ve ever played needs to work on that big time. I meen if someone is shooting at you should you not be able to view and aim ur gun or weapon at the target instantly I meen come on and the entire world can quote me on this it doesnt take 2 or 3 seconds to turn around. As a matter of fact il do it right now in the heavyest clothes i have ...

Im currently wearing 6 t shirts, 4 sweaters, 3 shorts, 2 jeans, 5 jogging pants, 3 bag packs filled with socks, 8 pairs of socks on my feet (yes i have a lot of clothes and since i hate sleeping i have alot of time to spare since im tired of working out and feel like taking a break tonight), 2 ancle wieghts on each foot 10 pounds each, 1 more on each wrist 5 pounds each, 3 pairs of gloves 2 regular tool gloves and 1 pair of winter gloves, 1 pair of safty s***s, 11 tooks, 1 cavs fitted cap, 1 belt, and a hand held weopon (unfortunatly its not loaded i have to buy more bullits from shooting at water jugs sorry about that).

It took me less than half a second to turn around. Approximatly 0.0.0.73 seconds and thats hours minutes seconds digit-seconds according to my cousins stop watch. So if anyone out there in the gaming world is saying theres no lag on killzone 2 or almost every shooting game ever made including cod2, ask them to put on the heavyest stuff they have and turn around and see how much time its take them to do so before saying theres no lag in killzone.

Cool story, bro. But what does any of that have to do with video games?

To Hambone usually i dont like to comment about members opinions on games because i feel everyone is intitled to there own opinion. However i must say since the 1st killzone its been extremly easy and believe me when i say this because i just got the game on saterday and i beat its campaign already, but then again i bought the game only to comment on it so i played it for almost the entire day on saterday. And i also wanted to see if wrath was right and to my surprise he was an i dout il ever disagree with him again because of just how current he was. Killzone 2 to me is an okay game if ur not use to a shooting game simply because you wouldnt have much to compare it with. Personaly i think the wii fit game is the worst game of 2009 because it really doesnt give u a proper workout like it advertises and to me its kind of "***" but thats my opinion.

You seem to have trouble with reading comprehension. I said I had a kill to death well above 1:1, as in around the 2:1 area. I hope in the future you read entire sentences.

Since when does "well above a 1.1 krd mean a 2.1 kdr?" You say i have comprehension issues so then do you have math issues? Your kdr was a 1.47 thats happens to be a 1.1 kdr.. If thats your argument im disappointed.. Would it not been better to just say i had a 2.1 kdr to avoid confusion? Well in your case though it would still be a 1.1... I mean really...

since when does well above a 1:1 mean 1:1? My argument isn't an argument. Its a factual retelling of what I actually said. I am going off the unit of measurement the developers of the game went by, which did not round down or up from 1 to 2 with no in between, regardless of your ****tarded arbitrary parameters. This blog and the comment section under it, is about killzone 2, not my prowess in playing it. I merely responded to a friend's points, using my experiences in the game as an example. The subject then, does not suddenly change to wrath-x-'s k/d. As a contributor to this site, I'd be thrilled if you'd try to stay with the topic at hand, rather than get into a cock measuring contest regarding what you view as good or bad, using your own special rules. I suggest you stick to your own wonderfully written blogs if you can't handle that.

I'm not here to keep you from being disappointed. I don't know you, thus its no concern of mine.

Well then you should have said that first rather then saying i have a reading comprehension issues. If staying on topic was really your main priority that is.. Ill end this now.. Comment as you like i wont respond.

I agree this game failed in a lot of ways that fanboys fail to aknowledge. But, it's still not the biggest FLOP of 2009. There were plenty other games that were just simply horrible. Unless you're just talking about the exclusives.
