How to turn your PS3 into a 500 gigabyte beast.

Now I just want to start this by saying I own both systems and am glad I do. However, you have to love Sony for including such an easy, no hastle option to swap out your hard drive.

I was up against the storage wall with my 80 gigabyte orginal hard drive and really didn't want to start deleting things off of my hard drive just to keep a buffer. My solution? I went to my local Best Buy and picked up a 500 gigabyte laptop hard drive. If you think that it would be a hastle to do this, never fear, its a snap.

1. Using the backup utility in the xmb, back up your ps3 data to an external hard drive.
2. Swap out the drives (making sure your ps3 is unplugged)
3. Turn on your ps3 and follow the instructions displayed on-screen.
4. Using the restore option in your xmb, restore all of the data you backed up from your other hard drive.
5. Enjoy.

The only thing I would say is that the back up and restore portions of this process may require an hour or two each, but its worth it.

Rmember to check out my youtube channel, and look forward to much more content to come.

How much did you pay for your 500gb HD and what brand? I can't seem to use up my 80gb even with 10gb dedicated to Linux. Making videos using EyeCreate uses a lot of space.

100 bucks for a western digital scorpio blue. I have 10 gigs dedicated to rockband alone.....a qore subscription, videos from eyecreate, and over 20 psn titles, not to mention all of the game files you get with bluray. Remember, I have over 20 ps3 games.

Very nice. Whats the RPM on that thing? I hear you can cut loading times by a few seconds depending how fast it is.

I need to upgrade my hard drive. I have like 2 gigs left on mine and i use the 40gig model. More space is always nice.

500 gigs might be to much for me though i was thinking maybe 250 gigs would be enough for me.

Edit: Never mind i found the specs here

Are there any specific requirements that need to be met in terms of compatability with the PS3 on a purchased Laptop HD or no?

Any 2.5" Laptop HD will work. Just to be safe do a little research and you will be fine.
